Achilles, Agony and Ecstasy in Eight Parts

AAaE is the longest (28'38") and most complex Manowar song: probably an anticipation of a concept album that was never accomplished. Because of its Homeric content, AAaE has recently attracted the attention of a group of scholars at Bologna University (Italy). Mrs E. Cavallini, Professor in Classics, has written about this song: "Joey DeMaio’s lyrics imply a careful and scrupulous reading of the Iliad. The songwriter has focused his attention essentially on the crucial fight between Hector and Achilles, has paraphrased some passages of the poem adapting them to the melodic structure with a certain fluency and partly reinterpreting them, but never altering or upsetting Homer’s storyline. The purpose of the lyrics (and of the music as well) is to evoke some characteristic Homeric sceneries: the raging storm of the battle, the barbaric, ferocious exultance of the winner, the grief and anguish of the warrior who feels death impending over him. The whole action hinges upon Hector and Achilles, who are represented as specular characters, divided by an irreducible hatred and yet destined to share a similar destiny. Both are caught in the moment of the greatest exaltation, as they savagely rejoice for the blood of their killed enemies, but also in the one of the extreme pain, when the daemon of war finally pounces on them. Furthermore, differently than in the irreverent and iconoclastic movie Troy, in AAaE the divine is a constant and ineluctable presence, determining human destinies with inscrutable and steely will: and, despite the generic reference to “the gods”, the real master of human lives is Zeus, the only God to whom both Hector and Achilles address their prayers".

MTV Unplugged in New York is a live album by the American grunge band Nirvana. It features an acoustic performance taped at Sony Music Studios in New York City on November 18, 1993 for the television series MTV Unplugged. The show was directed by Beth McCarthy and first aired on the cable television network MTV on December 14, 1993. As opposed to traditional practice on the television series, Nirvana played mainly lesser-known material and cover versions of songs by The Vaselines, David Bowie, Meat Puppets (during which they were joined by members of the group onstage) and Leadbelly.

MTV Unplugged in New York was the first Nirvana album released in the wake of the April 1994 suicide of singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and has become the most successful posthumous Nirvana release, selling five million copies in America by 1997.^{[citation needed]} It was hailed by critics as proof the band was able to transcend the grunge sound they were commonly associated with.^[1] MTV Unplugged in New York includes two songs which were not aired on the original television broadcast of the concert: "Something in the Way" and "Oh, Me". The album won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996. The performance received a DVD release in 2007.

In Utero is the third and final studio album by the American grunge band Nirvana, released on September 21, 1993 by DGC Records. The album's abrasive and aggressive sound was a departure from the polished production of the band's breakthrough second album, Nevermind (1991), due in part to the selection of recording engineer Steve Albini. The subject matters of the songs included dysfunctional family, cancer, issues of privacy, and abortion.

"Heart-Shaped Box" was the first single released from the album, followed by "All Apologies/Rape Me", which was released as a double A-side single due to the explicit nature of the latter song. Both singles topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States. "Pennyroyal Tea" was intended to be released as the third single in April 1994, but was cancelled after the death of the band's frontman, Kurt Cobain.

While In Utero did not sell as well as Nevermind, it was a commercial and critical success. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America by the end of 1993; it was most recently certified 5x platinum, and now ranks in the top 100 bestselling albums in the US.

Nevermind is the second studio album by the American rock band Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991. Produced by Butch Vig, Nevermind was the group's first release on Geffen Records, which signaled its move away from Seattle-based independent record label Sub Pop. Front man Kurt Cobain sought to make music outside of the restrictive confines of the Seattle grunge scene, drawing influence from groups such as the Pixies and its use of loud/quiet song dynamics.

Nevermind was a surprise success by late 1991, largely due to the success of its lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit". By January 1992 it had replaced Michael Jackson's album Dangerous at number one on the Billboard charts. Nevermind was responsible for bringing alternative rock to a large mainstream audience, and would subsequently be regarded as one of the best rock albums of all time.

Bleach is the debut album by the American alternative rock band Nirvana. It was released in June 1989 through the Sub Pop record label. Bleach originally sold only 30,000 copies, but following the enormous success of the band's second album, Nevermind (1991), fans discovered Nirvana's little-known debut album. It has now sold over four million copies worldwide.

The album's working title was Too Many Humans. It was officially named Bleach in February 1989 after the band's frontman Kurt Cobain found an AIDS prevention poster while Nirvana was driving through San Francisco. St. Anger is the eighth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on June 5, 2003. The album was originally to be released on June 10, 2003, but because of fears of extended music piracy over filesharing networks, St. Anger was released five days earlier.

The album hit #1 in 30 countries, including the U.S. Billboard 200 and Canadian Albums Chart. In 2004, the lead single from the album, "St. Anger", won a Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance".

St. Anger represents the last collaboration between Metallica and longtime producer Bob Rock, with the announcement in early 2006 that Rick Rubin would assume production duties on their forthcoming album. A modernized version of the Metallica logo, again featuring the stabbing edges of the first and last letters of the band's earlier 1980s logo, made its debut on St. Anger.

History

Five and a half years elapsed between the release of the band's previous studio album, ReLoad, and the recording of St. Anger, which began in 2002. Many factors contributed to this delay, including the departure of bassist Jason Newsted, the band's feud with file-sharing service Napster, and vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield's several months in rehab for alcoholism and other unspecified addictions. The 2004 film Some Kind of Monster documents that relationships between the band members in the lead-up to the album's recording were at an all-time low.

The band began initial writing for the album in January 2001, when they rented out and converted an army barrack in The Presidio in San Francisco, California, into a makeshift studio.^[6] Uncomfortable with the idea of bringing in an immediate replacement for Newsted, the band opted to have producer Bob Rock play bass guitar for the recording of the album, with plans to find a fulltime bass player upon the record's completion. Recording came to a halt in July 2001 when the band announced via its website that James Hetfield had entered a rehab center for treatment of alcoholism and other addictions. Prior to the album's release, Lars Ulrich would leave videos and audio of himself discussing the new album on the band's blog, jumpinthestudio.com (no longer working).

Composer Michael Kamen scored the symphonic arrangements and conducted the orchestra during the concert.

The album's title is a play on words. The "S" (ostensibly for "symphony") is formed from a backwards treble clef, while the "M" (ostensibly for "Metallica") is taken from the band's classic logo.

ReLoad is the seventh album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released in 1997. It is the direct counterpart to their 1996 album, Load. Over 3 million copies have been sold in the US as certified by the RIAA.

History

The album consists of material originally written during the writing sessions for the band's previous album, Load. Metallica had initially hoped to release the Load & ReLoad songs as a double album, but that idea proved untenable for a variety of reasons. Aside from the album title, ReLoad also shares similar artwork with Load (Load uses Andres Serrano's Blood and Semen III while ReLoad uses his Piss and Blood) and a similarly distinctive blues-rock feel in many of the songs.

In addition to heavy grooves like "Fuel" and "Devil's Dance," ReLoad continues the experimentation seen on Load, with the use of violin and hurdy gurdy on "Low Man's Lyric" and Marianne Faithfull's haunting vocals on "The Memory Remains." It also bears a sequel of sorts in "The Unforgiven II," referencing a single from 1991's Metallica.

The cover of the album is original artwork depicting urine and blood. It is one of three photographic studies by Andres Serrano created in 1990 by mingling the artist's own urine and bovine blood between two sheets of Plexiglas. As with Load, ReLoad included a booklet containing band photos and select lyrics for each song.

ReLoad would mark the end of a brief, blues-influenced chapter of Metallica. They would again reinvent themselves with St. Anger, Metallica's first studio album in six years. The delay would be brought on by various circumstances such as Hetfield's entrance into rehab and the of departure of Jason Newsted from the band in 2001.

History

The album marked the band's return to the musical landscape, approximately five years after the release of their international smash success, Metallica. Load saw the band embrace a collective sound and identity far removed from their thrash metal roots. As on previous releases, the fourteen songs that would eventually make up the album began as rough demos created by principal songwriters James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich in Ulrich's basement recording studio, "The Dungeon." The band took over 30 demos into The Plant Studios in the spring of 1995 where they would work for approximately the next year. Once again, Metallica teamed up with famed producer Bob Rock, who had been at the helm during the recording process for Metallica.

The songwriting dispenses almost entirely with the thrash metal style that characterized the band's sound in the 1980s. In place of staccato riffs, Hetfield and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett experimented with more blues-based tones and styles. As the group had become friends with country star Waylon Jennings prior to the recording of Load, he is often credited as influential to the album's new sound, particularly songs like "Mama Said." Additionally, Ulrich adopted a minimalist approach to his drum recording, abandoning the speed and complex double bass patterns of previous albums. Hetfield displayed a lyrical evolution as well, writing what many feel to be his most personal and introspective lyrics. "Until it Sleeps," the album's lead single, addressed his father's losing battle with cancer, while "Mama Said" explored his relationship with his mother. All of this marked a departure from the political and social overtones of albums like ...And Justice for All and Master of Puppets.

The album also marked the first appearance of a new Metallica logo, rounding off the stabbing edges of the first and last letters of the band's earlier 1980s logo. The M from the original logo was used to make a shaken-like symbol known as the "ninja star" which was used as an alternate logo on this and future albums as well as other related artwork. The album featured an expansive booklet which contained many photos of the band. The booklet only contained select lyrics from each song in contrast to Metallica's previous studio albums which included complete song lyrics. Additionally, the interior artwork revolved around images of inkblots, a theme which would carry over to ReLoad and the covers for the singles released from the two albums.

The cover of the album is original artwork entitled "Semen and Blood III." It is one of three photographic studies by Andres Serrano created in 1990 by mingling the artist's own semen and bovine blood between two sheets of Plexiglas.^[2]

This was Metallica's longest studio album, clocking in at 78:59. Initial pressings of the album were affixed with stickers that boasted its long playtime, simply reading "78:59."

"The Outlaw Torn" had to be shortened by about one minute to fit on the album. The full version was released on a single for "The Memory Remains" as "The Outlaw Torn (Unencumbered by Manufacturing Restrictions Version)" with a running time of 10:48. An explanation was given on the single's back cover:

When we were doing the final sequencing of the 'LOAD' album, the record company told us that we couldn't go a second past 78.59, or your CD's wouldn't play without potentially skipping. With our 14 songs, we were running about 30 seconds over, and something had to give, so the cool-ass jam at the end of 'Outlaw' got chopped (ARRRGGGHHH!!). Here is the full version as it was written, recorded and meant to be.

This was also the only Metallica studio album not to have the bassist have a writing credit. It was also their first album for all tracks to be drop-tuned a half-step; they did however, start tuning down on Master of Puppets on "The Thing That Should Not Be" and on The Black Album on "The God That Failed", and some cover songs, after that album, including the Motorhead songs that they covered before recording Load.

Gone for the most part were faster staccato riffs during verses and throaty vocals found on the band's first four albums; the overall speed and complexity of the music was greatly reduced. The Black Album presented a more radio-friendly, commercially accessible Metallica, especially evidenced by the ballad "Nothing Else Matters". Moreover, following the success of "One," the breakaway single from their ...And Justice for All album, five videos were released from the Black Album. ("Enter Sandman", "Nothing Else Matters", "Sad but True", "Wherever I May Roam" and "The Unforgiven").

The lyrics of The Black Album, written by James Hetfield, were much more personal and introspective in nature than previous Metallica albums.^{[citation needed]}. For example, "The God That Failed" dealt with Hetfield's mother's death from cancer and her Christian Science beliefs which kept her from seeking medical treatment. "Nothing Else Matters" expresses the connection Hetfield felt with a girlfriend while out on the road. The album ended Metallica's tradition of including a lengthy instrumental track on each album. It also marked their first use of tuning down a half-step with "The God That Failed".

The album proved to be a modest commercial success upon its release, reaching number twenty-nine on the U.S. Billboard 200, making it the very first thrash metal album to crack the top 40. With the band's rising popularity from the release of ...And Justice for All, awareness of the album has increased, and according to the RIAA, it has sold over six million copies in the U.S. alone. It was the last album the band recorded with bass player Cliff Burton, who was killed in a tour bus crash six months after it was released.

Historical significance

The band's line-up during the album's recording was James Hetfield on vocals and rhythm guitar, Lars Ulrich on drums, Kirk Hammett on lead guitar, and Cliff Burton on bass. The album is remembered in part due to the death of Burton shortly after the release of the album in a bus accident while supporting the album on tour.

When it was released, Master of Puppets provided many metal fans with an alternate image to the commercially popular glam metal bands, such as Poison and Ratt. The album has frequently been tagged by critics as "one of the most influential heavy metal albums of all time."^[3]

As an early parody of the PMRC's "explicit lyrics" warning labels, many prints of Metallica's 1986 release of Master of Puppets sported a sticker on the front in the shape of a stop-sign saying:

"The only track you probably won't want to play is "Damage, Inc." due to the multiple use of the infamous "F" word. otherwise, there aren't any "Shits," "Fucks," "Pisses," "Cunts," "Motherfuckers," or "Cocksuckers" anywhere on this record"

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its release, Metallica played the album in its entirety on their Escape from the Studio '06 tour, for the first time ever at the Rock am Ring festival on June 3, 2006. These concerts included the first-ever complete performances of the instrumental "Orion" (though portions of the song's lengthy middle section had been performed at various times as part of instrumental medleys and bass solos since the early 1990s).

The title track was ranked Number 51 in the "The Greatest Guitar Solos" from Guitar World. In 2006, the album was voted the fourth "greatest guitar album of all time" in Guitar World. And the April 5, edition of Kerrang! was dedicated to it, providing readers with the cover album "Master of Puppets: Remastered". In March 2007, the guitar magazine Total Guitar ranked the 100 greatest riffs of all time, and the main riff in the album's title track was ranked number one.

Reception

Upon its release, Master of Puppets was immediately commercially successful, selling over half a million copies at its time of release without any major video/radio airplay, making it the band's first record to be certified Gold by the RIAA.

According to Allmusic's Steve Huey, Master of Puppets "was the band's greatest achievement." "Some critics have called Master of Puppets the best heavy metal album ever recorded", Huey noted.^[4] Master of Puppets has featured on several "greatest albums of all time" lists. The album is present in a list dubbed "The All-TIME 100 Albums" and published by TIME magazine in November 2006.^[5] In TIME critic Josh Tyrangiel's opinion, "Metallica didn't bother with hooks or pop discipline" in writing Master of Puppets.^[5] Metal Rules rated the album as being number one in a list of the "Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums" published in September 2003,^[6]IGN also rated the album as being at first position in a list of the "Top 25 Metal Albums" issued in January 2007.^[7] It is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and Q magazine counted it among the 50 heaviest albums of all time. whereas

Ride the Lightning is often hailed by fans as a classic of the thrash metal genre, and a vital bridge between the band's albums Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppets, pushing the thrash metal of the debut into progressive territory more fully-realized on Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All.

Ride the Lightning retains the speed of Kill 'Em All on songs like "Trapped Under Ice" and "Fight Fire with Fire", but also contains the first of Metallica's longer, more symphonically arranged tracks, such as "Fade to Black" and the nearly 9-minute closing instrumental "The Call of Ktulu".

Still Climbing is the fourth studio album by Cinderella, released in 1994 through Mercury Records. Musically, it followed in the footsteps of their previous effort, Heartbreak Station, providing them with another album of gritty blues-rock in the vein of The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses and Humble Pie. Unfortunately, the album, which by most fans has been named as the equal or more of their previous efforts in terms of quality, was the victim of an MTV that ignored it, a record company that barely promoted it, and an audience whose taste had changed completely.

While Cinderella's first three albums all had gone platinum, the domination of grunge and alternative rock in the mid-1990s was so strong that it forced Still Climbing to chart at a lowly #178 and drop out after a mere few weeks. Despite featuring the minor hits "Bad Attitude Shuffle" (which was released as a single), "Hard to Find Words", and "Hot and Bothered" from the Wayne's World soundtrack, the album went nowhere, and the band's so far last studio album stands as a prime example of the loss of popularity among 1980's hard rock bands after the arrival of Nirvana.

Heartbreak Station is Cinderella's third studio album, released in 1990 through Mercury Records. It hit #19 in the US and went platinum for selling a million albums there the same year. But while the band's two previous efforts, Night Songs and Long Cold Winter, had both gone double platinum and reaching triple during the 1990's, and had each landed in the US top ten while featuring a US top 20 hit, Heartbreak Station achieved none of these things. This is probably because the band abandoned their Def Leppard influence completely, and devoted itself to gritty, boozy rock'n'roll in the vein of Deep Purple, Humble Pie and Mott the Hoople, while Long Cold Winter had retained some of the pop-metal slickness of Night Songs while still diving into Rolling Stones-like territory. This seems to be the reason for its relative commercial disappointment, while at the same time is the reason for its many good reviews, which name it the best of Cinderella's classic albums (check the allmusic review for example). The album featured two singles, which were "Shelter Me", hitting #36 in the US, and the title track, which made #44.

The album featurs four singles, which were all hits in the US. "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)", which was to be Cinderella's highest-charting single, reached #12, "The Last Mile", reached #36, "Coming Home" reached #20, and the classic "Gypsy Road" hit #51 a full year after the release of the album itself.

With Long Cold Winter, Cinderella started to move away from the glam metal-territory of their previous album and into a more blues-rock direction, akin to early 70's Rolling Stones, Humble Pie and Deep Purple. Still retaining elements of their Def Leppard-like past, the album is widely seen as the representative sound of Cinderella, bridging a gap between their pop-metal beginnings to that of their later styles, represented by their following album, Heartbreak Station.

Night Songs is Cinderella's debut album, released in 1986 through Mercury Records. It sold several million copies due to a combination of their breakthrough single Nobody's Fool, MTV airplay, and an opening slot on labelmates Bon Jovi's tour, in support of their album Slippery When Wet. The album peaked at #3 on the US charts on February 7, 1987,[1] and was certified double platinum for selling 2 million copies there twelve days later.[2] In May 1991 it was certified triple platinum for selling 3 million copies sold[2], proving that its commercial status hadn't shrunk. Leadoff single "Shake Me" failed to chart, but "Nobody's Fool" cracked the Top 20, reaching #13. Third single "Somebody Save Me" stalled at #66. On May 4, 1987, Cinderella filmed parts of their concert in Philadelphia. These live songs were, along with their three MTV videos, released on home video in August 1987 on Night Songs: The Videos.

Five Songs and a Cover is an EP released by the Foo Fighters in 2005. Released on November 20, 2005, it was exclusively distributed to Best Buy retail stores.

The E.P. is a collection of B-sides that come from the band's 2005 album, In Your Honor. The title simply refers to the fact that it contains five songs, and a cover song. The cover song is of Cream's song, "I Feel Free", which features drummer Taylor Hawkins on vocals, and lead vocalist Dave Grohl providing the drums. One song on the album, "Skin and Bones" was released as a B-side to "D.O.A." but became a major part of the Foo Fighters acoustic shows. It was played on most of their acoustic tour, on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and when they toured as an opener for Bob Dylan.

There Is Nothing Left to Lose is the third album by the Foo Fighters, released in 1999, following the band's biggest seller, The Colour and the Shape. Their first release on the BMG label, the album debuted and peaked at #10 both in the US and UK, and broadened their fanbase further with such hits as "Learn to Fly", "Stacked Actors", "Breakout" and "Next Year". Many of the songs stray from the band's first two albums because they have a mildly experimental feel. The album is also more radio-friendly, with less abrasive vocals and less angry and aggressive songs than other Foo Fighters albums.

It was the first album recorded with permanent drummer Taylor Hawkins, and last album to not feature permanent guitarist Chris Shiflett, who replaced former guitarist Franz Stahl. Stahl departed the band just prior to the album's recording due to creative differences, wanting to play harder edged songs like the previous albums featured. Since There Is Nothing Left to Lose, the Foo Fighters have held up the same line-up of Dave Grohl, Shiflett, Hawkins, and Nate Mendel.

Early pressings of the disc included a temporary tattoo, similar to the one featured on the album cover. The album was also re-released in 2001 as a two-CD edition which offers a second VCD disc of four videos and one bonus track, "Fraternity." This edition has a picture of the Australian swimmer Michael Klim on the front, chosen because he has a Foo Fighters tattoo on his left shoulder, and has also admitted to be a Foo Fighters fan several times.

Singer/guitarist Dave Grohl has stated before that the album was recorded at his home and that the band would have "a BBQ every day after recording."

This album was the first Foo Fighters album to have a song reach the top of the Modern Rock Tracks chart, with "Learn to Fly." It started a pattern of every Foo Fighters album having more weeks at the top of the chart than the one before it (There Is Nothing Left to Lose - 1 week; One By One - 10 weeks; In Your Honor - 13 weeks; Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace - 25 weeks).

The album is widely available as an "Enhanced CD".
